Spent a couple of hours in the Morisset Hospital grounds yesterday
morning from 0830 to 1100 - with hopes of poss Swift Parrot and Regent
HE sightings. I do not know the site so just looked around for flowering
trees and ended up making a couple of stops on the road in from
Morisset, then spending most of the time by the lake shore where there
is a heavy concentration of flowering eucalypts.

The last couple of kilometres of the entrance road before reaching the
first hospital buildings had large numbers of Noisy Friarbirds in
eucalypt woodland, the calls of which actually made it difficult to pick
up most other calls. Interestingly there were no lorikeets in evidence
here.

On reaching the hospital grounds adjoining the shores of Lake Macquarie,
the lorikeet activity in the parkland here was incredible. Many parties
of Musks feeding right through the area in a variety of trees, and right
by the lake large numbers of Littles (in a eucalypt species with pale
largely smooth trunk, fine longish leaves and fine cream coloured
blossoms - sorry, no id made). To a Sydneysider, Rainbows were notable
for their small numbers - only saw a few parties of 3-5 birds.

Calls of the Musks and Littles were so overwhelming in this area - esp
with a cruising Australian Goshawk around panicking the feeding parties
- that it was hard to pick up other calls over their din.

I had 2 Swift Parrot sightings, both unfortunately brief - 3 birds in
the hospital grounds just back from the lake, and another of 3 birds
(poss same ones?) flying over the railway station at Morisset town. The
town itself was also busy with Musks.

No Regent HEs, and other than the friarbirds only small numbers of Noisy
Miners and Yellow-faced HEs in the lake foreshore area.

A nice spot for Eastern Grey Kangaroos as well, for somewhere this close
to Sydney - good sized mobs and lots of joeys in evidence.
