I had another superb hour or so this morning (26/5/07) at Prospect Reservoir
picnic area in western Sydney.
During that time, I heard a few SWIFT PARROTS calling about the top of the
hill (above the George Maunder Lookout) but unfortunately the birds were out
of reach too high up in the very tall eucalypts (Forest Red and Spotted
Gums) and well away from the road/picnic area. Hopefully we may have better
chance to see them in coming weeks. There appeared to be only a few
eucalypts in flower but there are others still in bud. But Swift Parrots are
fond of lerps and their could be a good supply of lerps in the area.
The bird diversity during the short time I was at Prospect was impressive
including a Topknot Pigeon, Bar-shouldered Doves, a Spangled Drongo,
Olive-backed Orioles, several Dusky Woodswallows, lots of migrating
Yellow-faced Honeyeaters and Silvereyes, the resident pair of White-bellied
Sea-eagles, a Swmap Harrier, 3 Whistling Kites together, a Black-shouldered
Kite and in the reservoir, 200 Great-crested Grebes (their numbers appeared
to have at least doubled in the last week).
