For quite some time now I've been using a Panasonic FZ30 with a Canon
1.5x teleconverter attached for bird photography, and for a budget
solution it takes a bit of beating. $1300 odd for 630 mm equivalent
focal length, image quality is excellent. The Panasonic cameras suffer
from digital noise, but the free download of Neat Image handles it very
well. Like all cameras of this type, focus at extreme telephoto in dim
light is a problem, best solution is to use spot focus in difficult
situations. Lack of extreme shutter speed is a drawback, 1300th sec. is
max, I use high speed burst mode for nervous subjects.
