we have just returned from a birding trip to the far west of Qld - at and
around Bedourie we saw large numbers of gull billed terns and whiskered
terns - and one white winged black tern

Could it have been one of these?John Tongue Ulverstone, Northern Tasmania On Saturday, April 21, 2007, at 08:23 PM, Elizabeth Shaw wrote:Hi all, On Thursday I was taken to Lake Hourdiman (26 degrees35.16's, 144degrees18.50') about 5 km east of Quilpie for a brief morning tea breaken route elsewhere. While sitting under the requisite Coolibah Tree one of the children I was with, using my binoculars, commented that she saw a 'seagull'. I looked and from a distance it certainly looked like a very white Silver Gull, but the flight was more like that of a tern. It briefly flew much closer to us and I could see it was all white with a sharp black beak and black eye. On checking the books all I could think it was would be aWhite Tern, but way out of range. Has anyone else seen this bird? Is thereanyone else in the area who could check and offer a second opinion?
