Hi Graham,
This message of yours might have answered a question I was just about to
post. I arrived at Cooma Station, Sunday and wemt out for my first sortie
yesterday afternoon. I got a brief look at a very bright red rump of a
finch with no obviously red on face/bill. The whole bird generally looked
brown. On checking the books I brought with me no red rumped finch is found
in this area. I was unable to search again this afternoon. Hopefully, I'll
get out there tomorrow afternoon.
Any other possibilities or sightings in this area?

Subject: Painted Finch, Sturt NP, NSW & SW QLD
G'day Birders,
I've just come back from a trip to SW Qld, NW NSW
(trip report coming soon), saw lots of good birds but one that stood out was
Painted Finch, what a stunning bird. We saw these at two locations, one of
which was in Sturt NP, at the Gorge Lookout. I was rather impressed with
this sighting as there is only one record on the NSW NPWS atlas (similar
area). However I have heard from John Rawsthorne that there are more Painted
Finches near Mt Wood Homestead, also in Sturt NP.
The other location was just west of Coopers Ck, west of Thargomindah. Both
of the field guides I had did not show them occurring in this area.
Cheers
Graham Turner
