Hi Tony,
for your info. I saw one Crested Shrike-tit near
the junction of Mathews and Dorset Vale Roads at
Scott Creek on 28th Dec. 2003; Coords 35°
03.810´ 138° 39.165´. I think that this is
about 30 km from the centre of Adelaide and near
the Scott Creek Conservation Park.
My only SA sighting of this species.
Regards, Andy
I have to agree with JAP below. Crested Shrike-Tit is not a common bird
in SA but does get seen and reported quite frequently. There was one
reported at the Birds SA campout near Naracoorte over Easter. The
nearest to Adelaide I've personally seen one was along Valley Rd in
Montacute Conservation Park, about 7km due east of Athelstone.
Tony.

G'day all and particularly our South Australian birders.
I saw two Crested Shrike-tits near Victor Harbour last week. Would any
of the locals like to comment on the status of Shrike-tits in South
Australia?
Gary responded:
Crested shrike tit can be seen in the Mt Lofty Ranges but it is not a
common
bird. Where I used to live in wilmington near Pt Augusta at the edge
of its range, I saw it three times in ten years. I have also seen it
in a red gum forest near Mannum, also on the edge of its range.
In general in my experience not a common bird in SA
I'm sure that knowledgeable people will reply/comment on this. But, as
a beginner/amateur, I have seen Crested Shrike-Tits on quite a few
BirdsSA outings. And have heard many reports of them at BirdsSA
meetings. Unfortunately, I haven't seen them myself in the local
Adelaide region but have heard reports (undeniable, I would say) of
Crested Shrike-Tits on the Adelaide Plains near where I live in Marden
from my neighbour about three houses away (identified - not just by me
but by a local expert - from her description of their behaviour and
comparison to a china plate she possesses with picture of a Crested
Shrike-Tit!), from a expert person who does counts locally around the
Torrens, and from an expert friend in St Peters. Perhaps these birds
just hide themselves very well.
