Early this morning before heading out for some shopping at Penrith, I
decided to have a quick look around Lapstone just in case I could catch a
glimpse of a Square-tailed Kite which has been reported in that area quite
frequently over the years. Just as well I had my pair of binoculars in the
car (you never know when you need them!) I decided the best place to look
was at the end of one streets opposite the national park in Lapstone. I had
a quick scan over the valley and saw almost straight away (after a quick
admiration of the view) a distant raptor with shallow up-swept wings and
after a few seconds thought this has got to be it. The raptor then came
closer (just as well to confirm it) and I could then clearly see its obvious
whitish face, and then even more closer (seeing well all the other features
of the bird) and then watched it land in a tree where I watched it for a few
minutes. I then drove up to the nearby Scout hall seeing the bird again as
it flew low over the forest scarring away a number of cockatoos and then it
disappeared.
Its been a while since I have seen a Square-tailed Kite close to Sydney (I
don't see them at Maroubra).
