Hi Paul,
Picaridin is available as Autan Repel and is marketed by SC Johnson
(part of Bayer) who also make Mr Muscle. Windex and Drano etc. I am
emailing them to find out where to buy it. Autan certainly sounds
like a good alternative to DEET based repellants. I have found an
interesting paper on repellents by the ADF which has results of tials
of both DEET and Picaridin based repellents. It can be found at
http://www.defence.gov.au/DPE/DHS/infocentre/publications/journals/
NoIDs/adfhealth_sept02/ADFHealth_3_2_58-63.html
The SC Johnson page on Autan is at

Cheers,
Carl Clifford

Yes, plastics do not like DEET, which is the main active ingredient
in the better repellents.
There is a DEET alternative called Picaridin that is supposed to be
as effective, but doesn't attack plastics and is almost odourless.
However, I wasn't able to find any products containing it last year;
it may be more widely available now.
