Hi Jan,
Sorry to hear about your problem with your Pentax binos, typical that
it happened outside the warranty period. I have had no problems with
mine and water. I regularly do a bit of birding on the coast and get
spray on mine. I just wash them off in a bit of water in the sink and
dry them well, using canned air to blast any water out of the hinge
post joints ( I never use the air near the glass, that is asking for
trouble).
I would say that in your case, some of the salt spray has got down
into the hinge post joints and survived the washing and corroded the
joint, unfortunately.
Hope you have better luck in future with binos.
Cheers,
Carl Clifford

Hi Carl,
I wish I could feel as confident as you about Pentax binoculars. I
bought a waterproof pair of 8 x 42 in 2000 in Cairns. They claim you
could wash them under the shower. $900 was more than I wanted to pay
but I felt the fact that they were waterproof and thus fungus free
would be worth it. However, in Dec 2004 I got salt spray on them in
the sub-Antarctic and so I briefly put them under the tap. Low and
behold next morning they could not be adjusted out wide again.
Luckily they fit my eye width but they cannot be used at a different
width.
I contacted the supplier in Cairns who said because they were over 12
months old they were not guaranteed. I would have thought
waterproofing was a lifetime feature. I did send them down to Pentax
in Sydney or Melbourne but they said there was nothing they could do.
So I am quite disillusioned about Pentax.
