Dear Mr. Turnbull,
We visited Macquarie Island about a year ago. The devastation being
wrought by rabbits was very depressing. Macquarie is the most beautiful of
the Subantarctic Islands we visited, but the loss of vegetation and erosion
from rabbits is appalling. Rabbit eradication is not a technical problem, it
just needs money, but if New Zealand can afford it for their Subantarctic
Islands, it would be a drop in Southern Ocean for Australia.
The Governments involved, particularly Federal, need to take a long
hard look at themselves.
Macquarie Island should be a National Treasure, not a National
Disgrace.
Yours Sincerely
Michael Hunter
