Many of you will have met Grev and Margaret Reidy from Sydney, birding
in Australia and overseas. Grev passed away yesterday after a 13 year
battle with cancer at the age of 79. Fortunately he was in good health
otherwise over much of that time.
He and Margaret reached the twitchers' goal of 700 Aussie ticks a
couple of years ago and they celebrated this with a 700 party. Grev
went on to reach 714 species. Unfortunately he wasn't well enough to
accompany me to Kangaroo Island last year to twitch the Antarctic Tern -
he wanted to. Grev and Margaret also managed to see approximately 4,500
world birds, a respectable number, and had some fabulous trips.
They both began a lifelong interest in birds when living in the Blue
Mountains west of Sydney in the early sixties and began birding in
earnest after moving to Griffith, frequenting the sewage farm, Pulletop
Reserve (when it had some of the mallee rarities) and other good spots
in the area.
In the late 60s the family moved to Sydney and continued to bird locally
and on holidays. The late 80s started a fascination with pelagics with
many a trip on the Sandra K from Wollongong with remarkable sightings
(not without some discomfort). With the advent of the Internet and
birding-aus, twitching became more feasible and prompted a number of
trips at short notice to places like Newcastle, Werribee, East
Gippsland, Adelaide, Gluepot, Noosa Heads, South West Queensland, etc.
Many of these twitches were successful but not all.
He was a long time member of Birds Australia, BOCA and a founding member
of, and sometime committee member of Cumberland BOC.
One of the things he most enjoyed, was meeting other birders from all
over the country and overseas.
Grev would have thanked you all for the time and enjoyment.
