Following on from Alan Rogers visit, Follow That Bird toured Christmas
Island on 15-18 December. A good birding trip that recorded 33 species
with 31 on Christmas and 5 on Cocos.
Red Junglefowl: aka Feral Chicken (20-30) daily on CI
Green Junglefowl: (2) on Cocos Airstrip on 15 Dec with (40) plus in late
afternoon giving good scope views here on the 18 Dec.
Abbott's Booby: (10) plus daily
Red-footed Booby: (100-500) daily
Brown Booby: (10-50) daily
Great Frigatebird: (100) plus daily
Lesser Frigatebird: (1) male over sportsground on 15 Dec.
Christmas Frigatebird: (10-100) daily
Red-tailed Tropicbird: (2-6) displaying over Rumah Tinggi on 16-17 Dec.
White-tailed Tropicbird: (20-50) daily
White-faced Heron: (2-8) daily
Eastern Reef Egret: (2) on both 16-17 Dec; all white morph birds. (1-2)
seen on Cocos Airstrip: also white morph birds.
Rufous Night-Heron: (2) adults at Hugh's Dale on 16 Dec. (1) on Cocos
Airstrip on 18 Dec.
Christmas Goshawk: (3) on 16 Dec and (1) 17 Dec.
Nankeen Kestrel: (10-20) plus daily
White-breasted Waterhen: (1) on 15 Dec at tip; (1) at Casino, (1) at tip
and (1) on north side of airstrip on 17 Dec with (1) at latter location
on 18 Dec.
Black-winged Stilt: (1) adult at Airport has been present since August
and was there every time we visited.
Pacific Golden Plover: (11) at the roost near Ethel Beach on 17 Dec
Common Sandpiper: (1) at Flying Fish Cove and Waterfall Cove on 16-17
Dec
Oriental Pratincole: (2) on the airstrip on 17-18 Dec. (2) on Cocos
Airstrip on 15 Dec and (10) here on 18 Dec.
Common Noddy: (100) daily
White Tern: (1) Cocos Airstrip on 15 Dec.
Emerald Dove: (10-20) daily
Christmas Imperial Pigeon: (10-100) plus daily
Oriental Cuckoo: (1) adult studied well at Winifred Beach turn off on 18
Dec
Christmas Hawk-Owl: (1) gave great views at Golf Course on 16 Dec
Glossy Swiftlet: (100) plus daily
Sacred Kingfisher: (1) Ethel Beach on 17 Dec. Unfortunately no sign of
the Eurasian Kingfisher despite some considerable searching.
Blue and White Flycatcher: (1) first winter female at Winifred Beach
turn off on 16 Dec and (1) first winter male at the same location on 18
Dec. No sign of the bird at the Sports Ground and the female would
appear to be a new individual to add to the previous four sightings in
this unusual fall out of this species.
Eurasian Tree Sparrow: (20-50) daily
Java Sparrow: Recorded on 16-18 Dec with max. (18) at Settlement
Christmas White-eye: (100-200) plus daily
Island Thrush: (10-30) daily
Also recorded Spinner Dolphin and Christmas Flying-Fox. Red Crab
migration was in full swing.
