Greetings,
Victorias Riflebirds on the Atherton Tablelands seem to have an abbreviated
season this year. Females were building nests before the males were serious
about displaying and there are fledglings all over the place at the moment. As
a consequence of this there amount of time per day and the length of the
display period in days has been much less than most years.
Spectacled Monarchs on the other hand have a new rash of fledglings. I cannot
say that these birds bred twice but it seems likely. A number of the rainforest
birds breed early this year. It is possible that because of the extra light in
the forest that they misread the season.
It is still cool up here and we have had only two storms but some "winter
drizzle" early in the month. Snakes are very quiet but the invertebrates are
now on the move.
Regards,
Alan Gillanders
