I'd like to endorse Russell's comments.

It was 41C (106F) in Adelaide today and 45C (113F) under our veranda here in Murray Bridge, 80km SE of Adelaide.

Tomorrow the forecast is for even greater fire risks with increasing wind speed. There is a total fire ban throughout South Australia, including the inner metropolitan area. All National Parks are closed.

As to the birds in this heat, we'd been away for 48 hours and on our return I noticed that out bird baths had dried up. Within 60 seconds of refilling them we had New Holland Honeyeaters, House Sparrows and Spotted Pardalotes drinking from them.

Anyone headed into the bush this weekend needs to be mindful of the weather and fires situation. I'm not sure if you've arrived here yet, Drew, but we've had bad bushfires in the NE of Victoria for the last week and they look set to worsen tomorrow with temperatures forecast to top 40 degrees in some places (37 in melbourne). 40 deg C is 104 Fahrenheit. There have been fires in the west and northwest as well, and anything is possible in these temperatures once the north wind gets going.

All the national parks and most state forests in the NE of the state are closed due to fires, as are many places in Gippsland.

You can check fire updates at

(for public land)

and

Cheers, and I hope everyone has a safe weekend.
