Dear Birders,
Many thanks to the birders who responded to my request for information about
wandering tattlers reported to be quite regularly seen at Calloundra headland
on the Queensland Sunshine Coast.
I ducked up there on Wednesday 6 December after business meetings in Brisbane
and stayed in a motel in Calloundra. I was up early on the 7th before dog
walkers and their ilk got out on the rock platform around the Calloundra
headland. I quite quickly saw a group of 4 tattlers and spent an hour following
them around. They clearly had white eyebrows that stopped at the eye, primary
wing feathers extending noticeably beyond the tail and a longish nasal groove.
I tried very hard to get a call out of them but had no luck! I believe that
they were wandering tattlers.
I took a number of photos and would welcome requests from anyone who would like
to check my analysis. Send me your e-mail address and I will respond with the
images - I am not techno literate enough to get them onto my web site at this
stage I am afraid.
After leaving Calloundra I went to the wader roost at Toorbul arriving an hour
or so before high tide. There were a mass of birds present but seemingly all
common species.Best sighting was the pair of nesting osprey just as one enters
Toorbul. Boondal wetlands later in the day was much the same - nothing special
but great sightings of mangrove honeyeater, red backed and variegated fairy
wren and a bee eater spending some time making sure the wasp it had caught was
dead before swallowing it.
