Chgris,
I can't help you with ID, but I have definitely seen both Baillon's and Spotted Crakes swimming, very much like a Moorhen does, so it wouldn't surprise me if most rails can swim (particularly given their habitat).
Cheers,
Peter

Hi all,

Thought I'd tap into the collective consciousness. I was birding in Boonah
near Brisbane on the weekend and saw a rail in a dense cluster of reeds near
the information centre. In south-east QLD my first thought is always
Buff-banded Rail, as this is the common option around here. However when
this rail saw me it proceeded to *swim* away from me, something I've never
seen before. I only had a very brief look, and the overall impression was
of a bird with little or no pattern on the front (I didn't get a look at the
rear).

So... has anyone had any experience with either Bush Hen, Buff-banded or
Lewin's Rails swimming? I'm sure from the shape and size of the bird that
it wasn't a Baillon's Crake, and the bird was quite brown.

Regards,
Chris
Brisbane, QLD
