May I be forgiven for a short (mostly) non-bird posting, please.
I recall (from the 1930s) being surprised and somewhat amused, to see my
father's horses eating Scotch Thistle flower-heads. They bit them off very,
very carefully indeed, but apparently the flavour was worth the risk.
Almost as surprising as seeing a ringtail possum happily munching on the
leaves of a Giant Stinging Tree - Dendrocnide excelsa (Laportea gigas), my
zoologist colleague Peter Ogilvie having insisted that I witness this, lest
he not be believed!
And I have seen a male Satin Bowerbird eating the leaves of the
Shining-leaved Stinging Tree (D. photinophylla).
Cheers
Syd
