Greg,
The Australian Biological Resource Study (ABRS - a part of DEH) used to supply the Census of Australian Vertebrate Species (CAVS) list which listed four digit codes for the groups you mentioned (I won't say all vertebrates because it doesn't include fish). Not certain if this is still available, but you can look at this web link.
http://www.deh.gov.au/biodiversity/abrs/online-resources/fauna/cavs/index.html
The recent publication by Clayton et al (CSIRO List of Australian Vertebrates) provides a list of all the species and subspecies (with CAVS Codes) and will be eventually used to update the CAVS list, which is theoretically the list of species the federal government uses for things (though this includes Schodde's taxonomy of passerines i.e. Black-eared Miner as a race and the old albatross taxonomy). This has been discussed previously on Birding-Aus, but I would still suggest it as a starting point. Note CAVS has never matched the Christidis & Boles list for Birds used by Birds Australia (and others) and the Grey-headed Lapwing probably isn't on the Birds Australia list unless it has been formerly accepted by BARC.
Cheers,
Peter

Gooday birders

Could any good person out there please direct me to a site where I can
download Excel compatible and complete up to date lists of Australian
mammals, reptiles and frogs. Might as well try and tick some of these
when in new areas looking for new birds. This will save me going through
the relevant texts and painstakingly typing each animal into a list.
