Dear all,
Having spent most of the last 6 months in the West Kimberley area, most of that
time as a volunteer at the Broome Bird Observatory, and finishing as a member
of the AWSG wader and tern expedition at Roebuck Bay and Anna Plains/80 Mile
Beach - let me say it loud and clear (as indeed Ricki Coughlan and others have
not hesitated to point out):-
If you want to treat yourselves to waders in a big way in the most amazing and
beautiful surrounds, then Go To Broome and Roebuck Bay. Even in winter, there
are waders and other shore birds aplenty and the whole environment there is
special.
The red of the sands of the Pindan scrublands stand in stark contrast to the
blues and greys of Roebuck Bay, and at sunset: - the spectre of colours over
it's tidal mudflats is something else to behold! Red, mauve, pink, silver,
blue, white, turquoise...and all shades in between.
Now, I have a request for Sydney-siders, please.
A birder extraordinaire and owl specialist from the U.K., Brian Little, whom I
met in W.A., is coming to Sydney for a short visit soon. He has not seen a
Powerful Owl before and I'd love for him to see one. I know some of the haunts
around here (Beecroft and Pennant Hills Park), but does anyone have any recent
sightings they might share, please? Much obliged.
Cheers
Peter Madvig
