During Birds Australia VicGroups regular monthly bird census of the Eastern
Treatment Plant near Carrum, SE of Melbourne, conducted yesterday 26
November 2006 by Andrew Silcocks, Dawn Neylan, Jennifer Hosken & myself, two
Yellow Wagtails were seen. This is the second record for the plant and only
the 5th or 6th record for Victoria and the first state sighting of two
together. Other highlights among the 71 species recorded (47 wetland
dependant & raptors), included 270 Blue-billed Ducks, 6 Cape Barren Geese,
51 Red-necked Avocets, 640 Whiskered Terns & 1 White-winged Black Tern. A
Banded Lapwing was the first seen at the Plant since the 1970's!
Unfortunately, as the Plant is a major hazard area, access is severely
restricted. Visitors must be accompanied by an inducted person. In any case
the birds were very flighty and were refound only once after the initial
sighting.
