Hi Birders,
Hot on the heals of the Fiordland Penguin washed ashore at Barragoot Beach
near Bermagui NSW on 22/10/06, another has come ashore, this time at Norah
Head, on the NSW Central Coast. This will be the 4th record for NSW if
accepted by the NSWORAC (but I am sure a foregone conclusion for the picture
in the Central Coast Express Advocate of 24/11/06 shows the crest and the
under flipper pattern correctly).
This is the second record for the Central Coast, the first Central Coast
record and the first NSW record was of a bird that came ashore at Ettalong
Beach near Woy Woy in 1917.
This penguin like the previous one, has been sent to Taronga Zoo and does
appear to have a better chance of survival as the other was seriously
injured and died within a few days.
Alan Morris
(grieving because the first I knew about it was reading in the paper after
it had been sent off to Taronga Zoo).
