The Orange cherry orchardists are lobbing the Orange City Council for a cull of the starling population. Some orchardists are quoting possible losses of between 50% to 100% of cherries due to the birds. Many orchardists are riding four wheelers and using hail canons as a deterrent. The smaller orchard are using bird netting but imagine covering 15-20 Hectares. At present many are using special traps that are catching 70 to 80 starlings a day with little impact on total populations. Because of the big dry they are hanging around the irrigation dams and bores. Maybe they should import a few raptors.
