Howdy Birders,
Off next week for a family holiday to Magnetic Island & wondered if
anyone had some tips / local knowledge to share.
Recently, had our 108th bird for the house list - a pair of
Horsfield's Bronze-cuckoos actively attended by Buff-rumped
Thornbills which made a welcome return after not having been spotted
for awhile. Mad (13) was distracted from his homework by calls from
out the front (oh for young ears) - asking me to investigate birds
that, according to him, would be worth my while. Also, a Dollarbird
made a 1st appearance for the season here on Sunday & Cicadabirds
have turned up.
A little while ago whilst sword fighting in the backyard with Ryley
(8), I unsuccessfully attempted to distract his form with a call
'look a Peregrine Falcon'. In a subsequent bout Ryley, ever the
mimic, made the call 'look a Peregrine Falcon' - I called his bluff &
looked above & there sure enough was a Perry above us. Now the call
is the standard distraction move & always brings to mind that classic
time. Ryley is quite a good spotter, particularly with Raptors. Mad &
I spotted a Little Eagle cruising the escarpment air space - we
called Ryley to see, which he did announcing that there were 2, which
there were much to Mad's & my surprise.
cheers Matt
