G'day Swift observers and others interested in swift sightings,
Once again a little late as the first birds for this season have been
reported, but I am still interested in collecting as many needletail
and Fork-tailed Swift sightings as possible.
Fork-tailed Swift (Apus pacificus ) Report for 2005/06 Season.
Last seasons first sighting was from WA, four birds at Lake Kununurra
on 17.9.2005, seen by Mat & Cathy Gilfedder. The second and third
sightings were from Qld. Stephen Keen made both sightings. The
first was a single bird at Kurumba 7.11.2005 while the second was of
2000 birds widely distributed around Windorah 7.11.2005.
The third sighting was of 1000 birds seen 50 km W of Mataranka by
Andrew Taylor where they were feeding with dollarbirds. The fourth
sighting was in SA where G. Young saw 50+ at the Honan Native Forest
Reserve. Then four sightings came from NSW followed mostly from NSW
and Qld. Several sightings came from SA including the only other
large flock. This was of 800 birds at Novar Gardens recorded by John
Turner 17.1.2006.
The first Victorian sighting was made by Lawrie Canole when he saw
one bird on a hot day at Lake Mokoan.
The last sightings from NSW were seen by Carol Probets and Clive
Meadows on 16th March at Richmond Turf Farm and at Uarramundi in the
Blue Mtns. The last South Australian sighting was made on 25th March
at Bernouilla by Chris Thomas and Margie Tiller. The last bird that
I know of seen in Australia was from Vic when Jenny Flood saw ten
with 20 White-throated Needletails at the Kiata Campground 9th May.
Of the 84 sightings I know of, 41 were made in NSW, Two in the NT, 17
in Qld, 15 in SA. Seven groups were reported to be feeding, two
feeding while travelling in a set direction, and nine travelling
without feeding. Seven groups appeared in association with rain and
seven appeared when there was no rain immediately prior to or
following the sighting.
Happy swift-watching and recording (please) this season.
Mike Tarburton
