Hi all,
Just wanted to let Brisbane birders know about some good birds that have
turned up recently in my local area (Fig Tree Pocket).
At Biami Yumba Lagoon we've had a Wandering Whistling-Duck take up residence
again, just a single bird for now. He seems to like perching on a fallen
branch along the far edge of the lake, but could be anywhere on the water or
even in the grassy edge. Not as exciting, but still significant is our
first ever Black-winged Stilt for the lagoon - could signal a change in the
lagoon's biology since there's no reason they shouldn't have turned up
before. A Buff-banded Rail is also showing well at the moment in the late
afternoon, anywhere along the edge of the lake but usually on the mown
grass.
At Rainbow Forest Park (just next to the Centenary Motorway), a juvenile
Rose-crowned Fruit-Dove turned up a few days ago. Rufous Fantails seem to
be fairly resident in the rainforest rehabilitation patch at the moment, and
just this afternoon I recorded 3 White-throated Needletails flying on the
storm front and a male White-winged Triller in one of the islands of
vegetation between the school ovals and the park.
And finally, have started to hear Cicadabird calls from across the river
near Sherwood Arboretum, so keep an eye out for them too.
Regards,
Chris
