Hi Birding-auser,
Yesterday Sunday afternoon 1:30pm at the hightide
sandpit, I witnessed the courtship display plus mating
of a pair of Little Tern. The male had a color bands
on both of its legs and the female had only metal band
on one leg.
After the mating, the male went on to hunt (divebomb)
for small fish very vigorously in the shallow water
around the boat ramp and returned very briefly just to
feed the female (about 6~7 times). Eventually the male
settled on the sandpit for a rest and later both
disappeared around 2:30pm.
I always thought that offering of fish is more like a
pre mating courtship ritual. But in this case, it was
a post mating feeding and the feeding was very quick
without any ritual.
I will post photos to anyone interested.
Also present on the sandpit were
1 Red Knot
1 Sharp-tailed Sandpiper (Very rich rufous upper and
reddish cap)
3 Curlew Sandpiper
46 Bar-tailed Godwit
3 Pelican
10+ Great Crested Tern
Silver Gulls
Regards,
Tun-Pin Ong
