There were 2 painted snipe at the 'swampy end' of Hasties Swamp in the Atherton Tablelands two days ago. They were in rushes close to some rusty metal fence posts. At the same spot was a spotless crake and buff-banded rail. Birding in the area, and for a short time on grassy spots in the coastal strip, I saw 107 species that day (or 108 if you count the jabiru in the wetland next to Cairns airport I saw when returning that night to Melbourne!). I was pretty stoked by 5 very confiding chowchilla at Lake Barine - a new bird for me.
