Seasonal variation in koel calls

Thanks for all the feedback on koels and cattle egrets.

And yes, Roger, I think they must be returning to the same spot annually, if
they always nest in the same tree at your dad's place and near us. Either
that or they all use the same guidebook.

Now another question:

Our koels who've just arrived are doing their typical early season,
two-syllable call -- to us it sounds like 'all-right. . . all-right. . .'.
but by the end of the season they have all given up that call and begin
their much more rapid, one-syllable call -- perhaps
'Wheet-wheet-wheet-wheet-wheet'.

Forgetting my transcription problems, why?

Why the change over the season?

And is their call different again when they are wintering in New Guinea?

Cheers

Hi Brian,

I am at Barden Ridge and so far this season we have not had our usual koel
close by. My father at Kogarah Bay has one that sits calling in a tree just
outside his bedroom window for the last several years. That got me thinking,

is it always the same Koel that comes back to the same tree? If that is a
general behaviour pattern, then the non-arrival in your mulberry tree, and
our usual nearby caller, could be because the bird has died and its place
has not been take by another.

Roger
