Hi Jon, Your observation may explain why two White-faced Herons have been flying around a paddock containing a putrefying kangaroo at Gundy (near Scone NSW), the paddock being a kilometre from water. I'll have a longer look next time. The 'roo, (roadkill) and the remains of a feral pig, were left there as a feeding station for Wedgetailed Eagles.
