Is there anything quite so sad as a tree trunk? This one, seen at
http://blog.360.yahoo.com/blog-kJfQDWYzaa_A1imEP5nOmT2n, is an old growth
Bangalay Eucalyptus botryoides, had a diameter at its base of 174cm. That
would have made it over 200 years old at the very least. It was standing in
the picnic area in Audley, Royal National Park.
This tree was cut down ... by park rangers! ... to make space for people to
play? to mitigate risk?.... not sure yet.
What I am sure of is that these trees need to be protected. There are so
many hollows, so much living space ... for birds and mammals! I had hoped
the Service would provide that protection!
