Yesterday I spent an enjoyable day of 'car-based' birding at WTP (Western
Treatment Plant - Werribee Victoria).
The wind was so strong that it was barely possible to use binoculars out of
shelter, let alone a scope.
Highlights were:-
Wood Sandpiper and Aust Crake - were at the first clump of reeds in third
pond on right at tee-section ponds.
Red Knots - A dozen were at the edge of the pond on the left at the same
spot as above.
Glossy Ibis - 13 were at pond ne of the Borrow pit (95E N&S) and another 15
at Walsh's lagoon (145W-No7).
Black-tailed Godwit - A number were at Walsh's lagoon (145W-No7).
Red-necked Phalarope - Was at Walsh's lagoon (145W-No7).
Whiskered Terns - There were 100's all over the farm, most in breeding plumage.
Golden Plovers - About 10 at Kirk Point
My bird of the day was definitely the phalarope which has coloured up
beautifully. It is worth a trip to see this vagrant showing its colours.
