Dear all
The large Mulberry tree in my back garden is weighed down with fruit -
and birds! So far hungry visitorss have included Crimson and Eastern
Rosellas, King Parrots, Figbirds, Little Ravens, Pied Currawongs,
Silvereyes, Scarlet, Lewin's and Yellow-faced Honeyeaters, Noisy
Friarbirds, Red Wattlebirds, Olive-backed Orioles, Satin Bowerbirds and
one female Regent Bowerbird, Black-faced Cuckoo-shrikes. The absentees
are Brown Cuckoo-doves that came last year to eat the fallen fruit.
So far the bounty is enough for all of us and when I venture under the
tree to pick a few for myself, it erupts into a scatter of birds.
One young male Figbird (bright light red eye patch but only a few black
feathers on his head and no olive green on back) sat in the tree and
gave a very good rendition of a Rainbow Lorikeet.
There is a lack of fruit in the rainforest ares around here at the
moment which may account for the number of fruit eaters. An oddity so
far is I haven't heard a Koel - they usually love the mulberries and
tend to stay in the tree all day.
The Channel-bills are still calling most mornings, as are Fantails and
Shining-bronze, a Brush Cuckoo called on the 14th but no Koels.
Bee-eaters turned up on the 12th and I thought I heard a Dollarbird on
the 18th but that needs confirmation.
Small birds are keeping a low profile as the Noisy Friarbirds are
causing havoc, calling and chasing and presumably sorting out pairs for
breeding. They chase off the ravens which I thoroughly approve of.
