Yesterday, 21st October 2006, I enjoyed a good morning's birding in
Sydney's Eastern suburbs (approx. 10km south of Sydney CBD).
I met a few other birdo's at East Lakes Golf Course in search of the
recently reported Little (Black-backed) Bittern but without success. The
breezy conditions may have kept the Bittern tucked inside the reeds.
However we did see a good mixture of other interesting birds including 6
Cattle and 2 Plumed Egrets, 5 Hardhead, at least 4 showy Baillon's
Crake, 13 Sharp-tailed Sandpipers, 10 Latham's Snipe (East Lakes is
definitely on of the best place in Sydney to see these birds and they
are often quite showy here), Red-rumped Parrots, Horsfield's
Bronze-cuckoos, a Sacred Kingfisher, Dollarbird, a male White-winged
Triller (both the Triller and Dollarbird where visible in the same
binocular view at the top of the same tree), a Golden Whistler, a Rufous
Fantail, several obliging Reed Warblers, both Tawny and Little
Grassbirds, Red-browed Firetails and Greenfinches (several of the later
where being quite conspicuous. East Lakes is one of a few places where
you can see these birds in Sydney and probably the best).
After East Lakes, Ricki Coughlan and I did a brief sea watch from
Mistral Pt, Maroubra were we observed at least one adult Wandering
Albatross on two occasions and good numbers of Shearwaters including at
least 25 Hutton's Shearwaters (which outnumbered the Fluttering
Shearwaters by 5:1).
Our list of sea birds and numbers for the 45 or so minutes we were at
Mistral Pt today included the following:
Wandering Albatross (1-2)
Wedge-tailed Shearwater (300)
Short-tailed Shearwater (2,000)
Fluttering Shearwater (5)
Hutton's Shearwater (25)
Australasian Gannet (4)
Little Black Cormorant (1)
Silver Gull (50)
On my way back home I also made a very brief visit at Penrhyn Rd where I
did not see too much of interest but 30 Bar-tailed Godwits and a
White-fronted Tern.
