Directions to the Grey Grasswren site about 90 km south of Birdsville, referred
to by Jen Spry in her email 'Great Grasswren trip Sept 06', posted 10 October
2006, are as follows:
Starting from the Birdsville Caravan Park, head south along the Birdsville
Track (Outside Track) for a distance of 93.5 km. Park on the west side of the
road 100 m or so past a left curve sign, car park co-ords of S 26d 39m 09.9s;
E139d 37m 01.0s. Head approx north west for about 830 m (using the right hand
tree of 4 trees on the skyline as a line) to the site at S26d 38m 49.5s; E139d
36m 42.0s. (All co-ords to WGS84 datum)
After 2 years looking and hoping at various sites with zero results we were
prepared to try any leads. We followed directions by Julie who found GGW's 90
km south of Birdsville when travelling with Laurie Knight in August 2005. On
the morning of 20 September 2006 we drove down the Birdsville Track looking for
good lignum and travelled about 5 km up and down the 90 km point before
deciding to stop at what looked the best of a pretty miserable lot of lignum.
We headed west but it was very dry. As one last shot we headed north west
where the lignum appeared to be a bit healthier. As we approached we saw a
depression with some mud and shallow water surrounded by respectable lignum.
My wife Shirley, who has excellent ears, heard the calls and soon we were
watching at least 4 GGW's running, flying and occasionally standing out in the
open or perching on lignum. We watched them from 8.30 am to 10.00 am and I
even managed to get some photos that clearly show the birds as GGW's.
That afternoon Jen Spry and her travelling companions went to the site and they
also had good views of at least 4 GGW's.
On 8 October Drew Morris from the Wirrarri Visitor Information Centre in
Birdsville went to the site and saw at least 4 GGW's. Drew has advised that
the site has now dried up.
