A question from a friend of mine. He saw a pair of Australian Wood Duck
(male and female) crossing a road near Stanthorpe followed by 23
ducklings. Since the recognised clutch size is from 6 to 11, and rarely up
to 14, the question is: was this a creche. No other adult Wood Duck were
seen.
One suggestion is that a pair could have adopted or taken over another
pair's brood, perhaps the adults having been killed.
Does anyone have a possible explanation for this large number of chicks to
one pair, or a similar experience?
Many thanks for any response
