Work was flying me down to Sydney for survey work (info to follow) and so I
came down a few days early to let the grandparents dote a bit longer and had
a acouple of days at my in-laws farm at Paynes Crossing PX (about halfway
between Broke and Wollombi to the south of the Hunter Valley, NSW).
Spent the first night at Pennant Hills where I heard my first Koel (28/9)
and Gang Gang Cockatoos (part of the Endangered Population in northern
Sydney). A Powerful Owl was also heard overnight (though not by me) - one of
Lane Cove Valley population.
Spent three days at PX, with cuckoos in abundance.
Pallid - 28-30/9
Fan-tailed - 28/9
Horsfield's Bronze 28-30/9 - A species I had not recorded here before,
though it sang the most
Channel-billed - overnight on the 28th and 29th, but not heard during the
day
Shining - 1 called on the 30th
Only missed Brush (probably a little early) and Koel from the list for the
farm.
Of the other spring migrants:
White-throated Gerygone - singing all three days, with two partially
completed nests present
Dollarbird - 1 seen on the 29/9
Leaden Flycatcher - 1 seen on the 29/9
White-winged Triller - A pair seen on 29/9 (a new species for the farm)
Rainbow Bee-eaters - Present all three days from 28/9
No Cicadabird, White-throated Nightjar or Sacred Kingfisher recorded.
Other interesting birds was a single male Red-capped Robin which I had not
seen before, and three threatened species (Grey-crowned Babbler, Speckled
Warbler and Gang Gang Cockatoo). Lots of activity generally amongst the
resident birds.
Cheers,
Peter
