Hi all,

I thought some of you might be interested in this...

BLACK-EARED MINER MONITORING: VOLUNTEER REQUIRED

An opportunity exists for a volunteer to participate in ornithological
research and population monitoring for the threatened Black-eared Miner.

Activities: Primarily searching for the Endangered Black-eared Miner
in a mallee reserve in north-western Victoria. Involves surveying
known colonies of Black-eared Miners, identifying birds, noting
colour-banded individuals and possible nesting sites.

Additional surveys for threatened Mallee Birds may be conducted at the
same time and all incidental threatened species records will be noted.

Searches will involve a mixture of vehicle-based call playback, point
counts and transects. When walking transects we may cover up to 10 km
a day off-tracks so potential volunteers need to be reasonably fit.

Personal qualities required: easy going and equable temperament;
ability to enjoy life in an isolated and challenging environment;
ability to work co-operatively and under direction as part of a team;
ability to keep detailed records.

Given this is a short focused field trip, good general birdwatching
skills are essential. Other desirable skills include previous
fieldwork (birds, flora/fauna); camping, bush navigation and first aid.

Location: Bronzewing Flora and Fauna Reserve, near Ouyen, north-west Victoria.

Duration: One person for a single 5 day trip.
Provisional dates are:
October 23rd to Oct 27th 2006

Expenses: food costs provided and transport ex Melbourne in
Universityvehicle. We will be camping at the site throughout the
duration of the survey.
