Water reserve home to protected animals

A sewage treatment area in Byron Bay, on the NSW north coast, is set to become a must-see destination for tourists.

The Integrated Water Management Reserve at Belongil will be opened by state and local government officials today.

The council's Phil Warner says the project aims to minimise electricity consumption and chemical use, while protecting wildlife habitats.

He says the reserve is home to more than 200 species of birds, 41 mammals and 31 endangered or protected species.

"The site itself, which has many valuable habitats and many, many different threatened and endangered species on site, so bringing all those factors together has led to the reserve, which has got some great outcomes for both the ecology and the community," he said.
