Hi all,

I've just returned from a 12-day trip to Victoria (visiting Werribee, Great Ocean Road and the mallee) and will write about all that later this week, but thought I'd mention a few NSW sightings first.

I stopped in at the Hay Wetlands (aka sewage ponds) on my way home and found it teeming with birdlife: most notable were a couple of Australasian Bitterns calling. Also 20-30 Baillon's Crakes, 6 Spotted Crakes, Black-tailed Native-hen, Shelduck, White-winged Fairy-wren... This site is a joy to visit: well signposted, easy access.

I also visited Fivebough Swamp and spent so long there that I ended up staying the night at Leeton. Most notable here were 3 Magpie Geese (listed as rare visitors on the Fivebough bird list); also saw a few Baillons and Spotted Crakes, White-bellied Sea-Eagle, many Whiskered Terns, c.150 Red-necked Avocets, a dozen or so Glossy Ibis, 3 Wood Sandpipers, many Sharpies, etc. On the track I encountered a very impressive Red-bellied Black Snake.

All the above sightings were on 29th Sept.

Superb Parrots were seen while driving: 2 flying over the Hume Highway at Jugiong on 19 Sept, and 1 seen at Woodstock (near Cowra) on 30 Sept.

The Fivebough Birding and Nature Fair scheduled for 22-26 November looks like it will be a great event. Good to see places like Leeton and Hay taking the initiative to encourage birding tourism.

cheers,

Carol
