Steve Irwin ("Crocodile Hunter", and owner of Australia Zoo) was killed by a stingray earlier today, whilst making a documentary. Whatever you think of the man and his stage manner (and that seems to have been what he was like all the time) we have lost someone who not only raised the awareness of Australian wildlife, but a man who was passionate about almost everything to do with the natural world.

He had a young family, and this makes his death even more tragic.

We are all poorer today for the passing of great characters like Barry Bucholtz and Steve Irwin.
