Hi all,
I have similar fond memories of Barry's hospitality and birding knowledge. I
met him on my first pelagic trip in Sydney in 2000. It turned out to be his
first as well. I later stayed with him in Alice Springs on a weekend trip
that yielded 8 lifers for me. Those two trips (and Barry's enthusiasm and
humour) were real birding highlights for me.
Cheers
Nick

It is terrible to hear that Barry Bucholtz has died.
Condolences to Barry's family and others in the
birding community throughout Australia.
He was a fantastic and enthusiastic birder with
arid species his main thing. Even when inconvenient,
he generously gave his time by helping people
with directions and information on rarer desert birds.
I was fortunate to be on one of the earlier Ashmore trips
when I met Barry....great sense of humour, very very
quick and sharp...He broke his toe on that trip and put
up with the 'toe-truck' jokes without a problem.
Mike might remember the small "L" liberal comment by someone
and Barry's laugh when Mike muttered under his breath,
More like large "L" Labour....not sure why I just remembered
that!
Later on, Barry and his family put me up for a night in Alice,
and they generously let me hitch a lift to Adelaide after
showing me the Grey Honeyeaters at Kunoth....seeing
an immature bird with the yellowish wash was amazing.
Barry got cranky with me for not being excited enough.
I just wasn't sure at the time that it was Grey HE. It was.
I remember he asked me about whitefaces on the way
and I said that I hoped to get to Lyndhurst at some stage.
He pulled over there and then....within an hour we'd seen all
three species!
He put me onto Penfolds 407 Cab Sav....I think I'll have one
for Barry tonight.
Cheers,
Bill Moorhead
