Hi Kevin,
I presume you are referring to the annual migration arrival. I am not sure
about Cape Woolami, but
http://www.port-fairy.com/shearwaters.htm
has some good information on the arrival dates for the Griffith Island
colony at Port Fairy. I suspect the Cape Woolami dates would be very
similar.
I visited the Port Fairy site a few years ago in January (in my pre-birding
days). Once the birds are nesting they spend all day fishing at sea then
return to the burrows at dusk. They assemble about 2 km off the island
before dark, then in the last of the dusk they fly into the island and land
in a concentrated "assault" over a short period of time. I estimated 90% of
the landings took place in a period of about 15 minutes. They are absolutely
silent in flight and the viewing platform is surrounded by burrows, so the
air seems to be filled with birds. Perhaps the most memorable part of the
experience was the awe of the children present, who just fell silent except
for the occasional "Look mummy".
I hope your Woolami trip is successful.
Regards
Roger.
