Hi birders,
I have just had an email from Brenda Uhlenhut in Japoonvale. Their property
(hers and Klaus') of 10 acres of rainforest was really very badly damaged by
Cyclone Larry to the extent that there was, and still isn't, much food for
the birds. In these circumstances they decided to put feeders out. Nearly 5
months later, they are still feeding, although a lot less than earlier to
give the birds a chance until the forest can support them again. I have to
say buying the food - especially things like bananas and pawpaws - must be a
financial strain, but they have persisted. Some species such as the
beautiful little sunbirds have not been seen since the cyclone - until
yesterday when Brenda saw a young female sunbird in their forest. Such a
happy moment which must reward them for all their work and dedication. It's
so nice to hear good news stories such a this.
Happy birding,
Fiona Anderson
