A visit to Point Cook coastal park this morning produced the following
sightings which may be of some interest to some people:
* A flock of 15 Blue-winged Parrots around the lake edge;
* 25 Double-banded Plover (many in full breeding colours) at the
point;
* A single Golden Plover, also at the point (? an over-winterer [only
very small numbers remain further south than 30 degrees through winter -
HANZAB], ? a very early return [not usually recorded in Victoria until
September - HANZAB]);
* Hundreds of Fluttering Shearwaters in a loose flock on the surface
of the water (and flying short distances) about 400 metres off the point
(with 10+ Gannets diving amongst them);
* A number of Little Penguins approx 200 metres from shore.
Diana and I went hoping to find Pallid Cuckoo which a few years ago were
regular breeders along Point Cook Homestead Rd at this time of year, but
failed to locate any for the second consecutive year (? due to nearby
development) - a single Fan-tailed Cuckoo was the best we could muster.
