g'Day all

Thanks to those who have replied to my earlier RFI. We had some discussion about this on birding-aus a few years back but it was never resolved then. I'm really looking for a list of Australian birds with 4 letter codes to label digital photographs for electronic sorting. For me, numbers are too hard to remember and don't give any clue to the subject (i.e. the banders or atlas code). Probably wishful thinking but I am looking for a broadly accepted system, based on something like the Birds Australia "Draft Working List of Birds of Australia and Australian Territories, 10 September 2003" or similar. Perhaps a 4 letter code system where the family name may be used first, followed by the species, e.g. White-fronted Chat could be CTWF, Orange Chat could be CTOR, Northern Royal Albatross could be ALNR, Buller's Albatross could be ALBU, Chestnut-breasted Whiteface could be WFCB etc. Obvious problem is that many of us have got used to some four letter codes that won't fit a standard useful for electronic sorting, e.g. CBWF for the Chestnut-breasted Whiteface, Black-faced Cuckoo_Shrike BFCS etc.etc. We need codes based on an accepted checklist of common names with simple rules to deal with duplicates but so far i haven't located one.

.
