I did a spot of birding in the Brisbane Valley with Russell & Dean
Woodfood today. We started at the Sherwood arboretum - dipped on the
bush hen [too much noise & carryon] - but found a Channel-billed Cuckoo
in a fig tree - an uncommon bird at this time of year. Russell wanted
to find a Cotton Pygmy-Goose, so we went to Colleges Crossing for
morning tea - we found a couple there, as well as a small group of
Long-billed Corellas. We then went out to Lake Apex [Gatton] to see if
there were any Wandering Whistling Ducks there - there were none there,
but we found [what we took to be] some hybrid ducks [presumably
PB-Mallard], another Cotton PG, half a dozen CC Jacanas. Things were
more interesting around the nearby Lk Freeman - we had some nice close
quail views [probably brown - have to examine the pix], a male Aus
Shoveller, a Glossy Ibis and a female FRECKLED DUCK [The last one I saw
was in a lake an hour north of Coolgardie 11 years ago]. We cruised on
to Lk Atkinson in search of the WWDs - no joy, and found that the Lake
is seriously in danger of drying out completely - when you see Avocets
standing around in the middle of a dam, you know things are pretty
dire. Russell saw a couple of RTB Cockies and there was a trio of
babblers at Lk Clarendon and a pair at Lk Atkinson. We stopped to
photograph a hobby on the way home.
Regards, Laurie.
