Townsville birding

Hi,

We are heading to Townsville, for the second time, in October to see my son and our new (and only) grandchild. We are staying for about a week and then moving on to Paluma and Lake Eacham.

My first question and our biggest problem is finding suitable accommodation in Townsville. The only accommodation I can find seems to revel in being big, solid concrete and close to the CBD or Strand, all of which we try to shun as much as possible. Does anyone know of a more house/town house/ cottage style accommodation within an easy drive of Townsville (Aitkenvale). (On our first visit several years ago there were several houses at Pallarenda but I can't seem to find them now).

The second question - does anyone have any suggestions as to good birding spots that we should try to see while we are there.

Cheers
