Hi All,
The latest info on the bird...
Four of us (Sebastian Pardo, Peter Kyne, Plaxy Barratt and myself) found it
at 12:45 at Burren Junction today after searching a large area, mostly
further to the west, from ~9:00.
The bird was on rough grass adjacent to the main road through Burren
Junction about 100 m east of the silos. It was on the north side of the road
before the cyclone fence (and grain bunker)wheras the silos are on the south
side of the road. It was accompanied by two masked lapwings. It is quite a
wary bird (more so than the masked lapwings) and at one stage flew north
over much of the town to land in Hastings St to forage with two other masked
lapwings in the roadside gutter. After a short period it moved again to
another gutter near the police station before flying back to the original
site near the silos. At times at the 'original site' it was very difficult
to find even though it is similar in size to a masked lapwing so I'd look
carefully here before trying elsewhere.
At 3:15 pm we left the bird at the original site when it was foraging near
the dirt track (north side of the road ~200 m east of the cyclone fence).
It has a badly injured right foot but is very alert.
At least 8 people saw it today but it was not found during a breif check at
dusk. I wouldn't put too much weight on this last minute miss though, as the
sun had almost set, and I reckon those that tried will succeed tomorrow.
Burren Junction is 90 km west of Narrabri in Northern NSW. There is a pub in
town that has accommodation/counter meals. There is also a service station
but it is NOT a 24 hour roadhouse.
Good luck to all that try for it.
Rohan Clarke
