After having seen a WHITE-NECKED HERON up the throat of the Dayboro
valley, I left ColinR to his no-bird pacings yesterday (see his
email, Sat, 17 Jun 2006 19:16:38 +1000), and drove on down to the
'Northlakes' lagoon (Maclintock Drive [spelling?]), which I'd first
noticed after this new road went in from Murrumba Downs.
By this time it was evening, with the light going fast, but
in the short time left I was delighted to see SPANGLED DRONGOs, at
least three NANKEEN KESTRELs, two male HARDHEADs and a female, lots
of IBIS and CORMORANTs and a SPOONBILL going into the melaleucas to
roost, PACIFIC BLACK DUCKs and SWAMPHENs and COOTs, a lone TORRESIAN
CROW speaking an unfamiliar maudlin dialect, three FOREST
KINGFISHERs, zillions of possibly BROWN HONEYEATERs (in the dark by
the time I found them), and a madness of MARTINs &/or SWALLOWs.
The first birds I saw there, though, were most pleasing -- at
the edge of the weed which is advancing down the lagoon, six or more
MAGPIE GEESE tranquilly weaving and upending.
Cheers,
Judith
