Hello all,
An interesting record for Deniliquin from the weekend.
On Saturday Geoff Plumb (a local birder) picked up Bassian Thrush in the
Deniliquin State Forest. The vegetation of the site would be described
as River Red Gum forest with moderately dense regrowth. Fallen timber of
various sizes is present, and grasses and leaf litter common. Up a
slight rise and you enter mature Black Box woodland. The Edward River
lies approximately 70 metres to the east.
The record was followed up by Tom Wheller and Steve Seymour Sunday
morning, who picked the bird up in about five minutes in the same
location. Tom and I went back in the afternoon and again, after
searching about 45 minutes, picked up the bird, in roughly the same spot
(within 20 metres or so) of the original observation - 10 metres from
where we parked the car.
The occasional individual has been picked up in the Riverina in the
past, including birds from Deniliquin (July-Aug 1954), north of Barham
(Sept 1959; May to June 1962) and also on the banks of the Murray River
east of Barham (April 1965), to the east at Tocumwal (1961), to the west
at Goodnight (1977) and at Cohuna.
Cheers
David Parker
